In preparing for an upcoming challenge, that day my challenger will ask me to define what learner centered teaching or student focused teaching methodology should be described as. My first response would be, why was school created,  just like an hospital, is it not supposed to be patient focused or centered design, so how did we lose it, it means some of us have given up, we have allowed mediocrity to seize the reins of power. So schools are to be learners focused, this raised a pertinent question that, who is currently the focus of learning – the school owners, the ministry of education, the school administrators or the school teachers – and how do we remove whichever answer we pick and get the learners to the center of focus and ensure they stay there.
Like all systems with multiple stakeholders, there will be complexities and challenges. Learners seem to be on the weakest side of the system, they seem to have the weakest influence and the system is created for them and because of them. So who will stand up for the learners, who will spearhead a change, who will lead a social movement? I must confess, we all can, and we are all potentiated including those reading this scripts, whenever we can muster the courage to act on new scripts, amazing things always happens. “Show me a superintendent or principal or a chancellor who has transformed his school and I will show you someone who led a social movement”. We must understand that excellence is a virus and it can spread like a raging avalanche of fury across a nation or continent. Bringing the center of focus to students and making all decisions count for them is the reason why we should have a school.

I will always remember to tell them that I was inspired to think about foundational principles for promoting a learner-centered approach to teaching in all levels of education.

Recognizing the limitations in attempting to represent the inherent complexities and nuances of teaching and learning, I shall be presenting my dissertation with the following points on learner-centered principles for teaching in advanced level education:
1.    Actively Engage Learners: ensure learning material is stimulating, relevant and interesting; explain material clearly; use a variety of methods that encourage active and deep approaches to learning, as well as adapt to evolving classroom contexts.
2.    Demonstrate Empathy and Respect: show interest in students’ opinions and concerns; seek to understand their diverse talents, needs, prior knowledge, and approaches to learning; encourage interaction between instructor and students; share your love of the discipline.
3.    Communicate Clear Expectations: make clear the intended learning outcomes and standards for performance; provide organization, structure and direction for where the course is going.
4.    Encourage Independence: provide opportunities for students to develop and draw upon personal interests; offer choice in learning processes and modes of assessment; provide timely and developmental feedback on learning; encourage metacognition to promote self-assessment of learning.
5.    Create a Community for Learning: use teaching methods and learning strategies that encourage mutual learning, as well as thoughtful, respectful and collaborative engagement and dialogue.
6.    Use Appropriate Assessment Methods: clearly align assessment methods with intended course outcomes; provide clear criteria for evaluation; emphasize deep learning; scaffold assessments to ensure progressive learning.
7.    Commit to Continuous Improvement: gather formative and summative feedback on your teaching; practice critical self-reflection; consult scholarly literature on teaching & learning; identify clear goals for strengthening your teaching practice.
with these few points,

In a recent article published in the Journal of Active Learning in Higher Education (2009, 10: 172‑184), Bantram and Bailey explored the responses of students to the conceptual question the topic of this article seem to settle at a University in the UK.
Four predominant themes were noted (in relative order of importance): a school that has excellent display of

1.      Teaching Skills:
§  Students felt that an effective teacher explained ideas and concepts well, like explaining to a five year old;
§  Motivated and sustained student interest;
§  Used active‑learning techniques;
§  And acted as a facilitator to encourage and guide learning.

2.      Personal Qualities:
§  Students valued personal qualities such as, “…being kind, helpful, patient, enthusiastic and having a great sense of humor.”

3.      Relationships with Students:
§  Students appreciated instructors who were friendly, approachable, and took the time to “get to know” them.

4.      Teacher Knowledge:
§  Subject‑matter expertise and knowledge emerged as the lowest ranked theme.

Would you not prefer a school where your child is a regarded and addressed as a king or queen, where there rights are preserved, even if learning and knowledge transference is close to perfection?
Like all patient in a hospital, you want all care to be centered on you, you want your preferences, rights, cultures, believes and values preserved and made a priority in all health care decisions. As patients seeks health from a hospital, so is a student who have come to seek knowledge in a school, they deserve to know and be duly protected within the limits of their rights from the African rights charters in education.
STUDENT RIGHT CHARTER

1. The right to Quality Education.
2. The right to be Safe and Protected.
3. The right to be Trusted and Treated as a capable and functioning person.
4. The right to express my Views and have my Opinions taken seriously.
5. The right to Privacy and to be treated as an Individual.
6. The right to special help if I have particular problems or if I have a disability.
7. The right to regular support from an Educational Welfare Officer when necessary.
8. The right to information about my Life and to have my personal information treated with Respect and in Confidence.
9. The right to have my Religion and Heritage respected.
10. The right to time for Play and Leisure activities.

A school that is particular about the qualities of her teachers and ensuring the delivery of qualitative learning to students and continuous improvement in learning techniques for teachers.
Chickering and Gamson’s (1987) classic Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate/ Advanced level Education, where an effective teacher is described to:

3. Encourage active learning by students;
4. Give prompt feedback to students;
5. Emphasize time management on task;
6. Communicate high expectations from students; and,
7. Respect diverse talents, culture, background and ways of learning.
